One of Moshe Feldenkrais' inspirations for the development of the Feldenkrais Method was the observation of babies and how they learn to move and engage in their environment. As babies we experience our world through movement before verbal and cognitive development take center stage.

In the remarkable short period of 12-15 months a newborn develops the ability for upright posture and learns to walk. Through movement we experience our world; we learn through our actions—through how we react to and interact with our environment and ourselves. It is this period that fundamentally influences the coordination, balance, fine motor skills, cognitive function, and learning of the person for their entire life. In this series we will revisit some of the essential stages of human development through Awareness through Movement lessons developed by Moshe Feldenkrais and Chava Shelhav.*

Reconnecting with some of these early learning patterns will give you a unique experience. You will find clarity, ease your own movement, and expand your own movement possibilities. Your balance and coordination will improve and you will discover how to integrate these experiences into your life. This series is also particularly helpful for parents, grandparents, educators and care/medical providers working with babies and young children across various disciplines.

Besides the actual lessons, relevant video material will be presented.

This series will be divided into four 6-week segments from September 2018 – March 2019. You can either attend single lessons or whole segments. You can join anytime, even if you missed lessons or earlier segments. Every week Uwe will teach a new lesson.

To give you a better idea, here are examples of some of the developmental stages/movements that will be covered in the series:

First segment September – October 2018 (Newborn – 4 months)

  • Breathing and Sucking
  • Experiences of and feeling the body relative to the floor and start of first explorations
  • Lifting the head, being on the belly
  • Rolling onto a side
  • Rolling from prone to supine and back
